Daytime work: what are the advantages of making cleanliness visible?

According to a survey carried out by BVA for Le Monde de la Propreté (2019), 70% of French people are in favor of working continuously and/or during the day . When the issues are presented to them, they appreciate being able to contribute to improving the working conditions of cleaners.

Daytime work and cleanliness: what are we talking about?

Cleanliness is an essential daily necessity which is (too) often assimilated to a convenience but which represents added value for the company and for the well-being of the occupants.

As we say Guess, day work and shift work are very different from each other. Indeed, their consequences on the pace of life are different and affect family and social relationships. Daytime work is generally from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work at staggered hours is often carried out before the arrival of employees, that is to say from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and after their departure from the office from 5:00 p.m./6:00 p.m.

What are the benefits of working during the day?

Working during the day brings many benefits both for Cleaners and for customers, employees and visitors to the premises:

Significant advantages for Cleaners

Daytime work has many advantages that directly impact the physical and/or mental state of cleaners. Here are some of them:

      • Continuous schedules: this allows the Cleaner to have regular schedules during the day. During staggered hours, the Cleaner starts early and/or finishes late. The rest of the day he is not on site.

        • Possibility of increasing working time: during daytime work the Cleaner is present on site at the same time than the occupants and can carry out additional tasks on request if necessary.

          • A better balance of work and personal life. One of the most important advantages of working during the day is that it allows the Cleaner to have a work rhythm in line with his family and those around him.

            • Transport in public transport more accessible because the public transport offer is more substantial during the day. In addition, the frequency of public transport is higher, particularly during peak hours, which is less the case during off-peak times.

              • More security (reduction of isolated work, etc.): working during the day allows coactivity since the Cleaner works on the same time slots as the majority of employees.

                • Better recognition of the work done. : daytime work makes the work done visible at the time it is done.

Benefits for customers and service users

Generally speaking, daytime work allows agents to interact with customers, occupants and visitors. It also allows:

                  • Better visibility of the services provided: this reassures the customer and employees about the hygiene of the premises, particularly during the Covid 19 health crisis.

                    • A cleanliness service continuously adjusted according to the rhythms of life and uses within work environments.

                      • Real-time feedback on the services provided by cleaning agents.

                        • An increased human presence and the possibility of a real-time response, particularly in the face of unforeseen events: the presence of Cleaners on site allows the customer to obtain a real-time response if a problem arises (spilled cup of coffee, etc.)

                        • A human relationship between employees, customers and cleaning agents.

                          • Daytime work also offers better security of premises which are closed outside working hours.

Example of situation in which communication is beneficial as much for the Cleaner, as for the employees and the customer

An employee spilled his cup of coffee on the carpet and tried to clean it. Unfortunately, the stain is embedded. He asks a Cleaner to clean the part of the carpet that is stained.

This scenario highlights the Cleaner's reactivity when an unwanted incident occurs.

                        What benefits for customers?

For customers, working during the day has certain advantages. Below, we can highlight two examples:

                        Reduced electricity consumption

Reduce electricity consumption (and therefore the bill): by working the day c Natural light dominates. On the other hand, if a Cleaner works staggered hours, he will have to turn on the light to carry out these services. This will lead to an increase in the electricity bill.

                        Reduced heating consumption

Reduce heating consumption (and therefore the bill): on the same principle as electricity during the day, the heating is not necessarily on. Conversely, at nightfall the temperatures drop and cool the offices.

A virtuous circle for the benefit of all

The virtuous circle can be defined as a positive interaction with other people.  Within a cleaning company, it takes on meaning when Cleaners and employees interact together.

Just as coactivity is just as important, it highlights the simultaneous work between the Cleaner and the occupants on the same site. It is this coactivity that creates a virtuous circle. Indeed, this brings benefits for each stakeholder because it allows the different actors to get to know each other and establish relationships with each other.

                            • For Cleaners: being on site at the same times as employees allows them to have a more sociable life and a work-life balance.

                              • For employees: they meet and discuss with the Cleaners, and can thus put a face to invisible actors when the work is carried out on a staggered schedule. This relationship that is created positively influences the commitment of Cleaners in their daily missions.

                            What should we conclude?

To conclude, working during the day and coactivity forward numerous advantages for the various stakeholders. This allows Cleaners to work at the same time as employees present on site.

However, coactivity requires both the will and organization of both parties in order to limit the potential discomfort of employees during their work (vacuuming during lunchtime and other noise pollution, etc.).

As soon as these two points are implemented, a relationship of trust is created between the Cleaners and the employees. This relationship reinforces both the consideration and commitment of our Cleaners, recognition as well as the assurance for employees to carry out their missions in a healthy environment conducive to work.
